Marshall Godfrey the 8th Viscount Raynham is in need of a wife, but his strenuous efforts to acquire one through normal channels have failed. He's out of patience and out of time. His twin sisters are being launched into society, but he can only hear within a very short distance. How can he protect them if no one tells him what people are saying? His plan is to hire a woman to hover at his shoulder and repeat into his ear what people are saying, but he can't take a secretary into polite society.

The fourteenth applicant is a thin bonneted creature in old ill-fitting clothes. She slowly unties the ribbons and removes the hideous hat hiding her face. She isn't ugly, but. Marshall's unfavourable assessment is suspended as the small window behind the solicitor's desk becomes a golden square. Sunshine breaks through the overcast sky, bends around several corners and showers the woman with light. She looks like she's stepped out of the Dutch paintings he saw on his grand tour. Poetic words sprout through his melancholy like brightly coloured tulips. She's plain, but there's something pleasing about the woman with honey coloured hair.

She can't possibly be the one. She probably has an irritating voice. She's probably in love with some Vicar. She probably smells like a close stool. She'll probably be unfit for purpose. He meets her curious expression with a scowl, she looked hungry. If she passes all the tests she'll be more inclined to become a temporary wife.

The Hired Wife edition by Cari Hislop Romance eBooks

The Hired Wife is a historical romance with an interesting plot premise. Man advertises for a wife as his hearing impairment makes it difficult to assist his sisters in society. The hired wife plot has been used before by other authors such as in Mary Balogh's more traditional Ideal Wife and Katie MacAlister's sexually charged Trouble with Harry. Both of these books are good reads. This novel is not.
The Hired Wife is a self-published novel. Knowing that, it is can be assumed it would not have the polish of a historical romance from a brick and mortar publisher. I have read self-published authors before and have found some small treasures with good plot and decent writing (Amanda Hocking comes to mind). I purchased the book as I wanted a new read and the one previous Amazon review seemed to indicate the book had promise. Promise was all the book had in store. The plot of the novel could have made a satisfying read but it was bogged down in a poorly written narrative. The prose begs for a great deal of editing. Quoting poetry is a great idea if part of the story but the longer passages seemed to be placed for word count rather that exposition. A romance needs to concentrate on the main characters and Ms. Hislip veers from scene to scene with too many side trips away from developing the main romantic characters. The Viscount and his hired wife held promise but remained one dimensional throughout. Marshall also came off as cartoonishly stupid, as well as hearing impaired, as he was made a fool of by the overtly evil Marquis of Morley's for years.

The Hired Wife edition by Cari Hislop Romance eBooks Reviews

I felt like everything was happening very quickly like the tempo of a song being way to quick, maybe it was just me. I liked the story itself but was not expecting any sadness or villinous behavior although it was obvious who it was from the get go. I normally like having the H/h both perfect and beautiful (I know I live in a dreamland) and to have both average in beauty and the Hero hearing empaired really made for a very sweet story. I have read other Cari Hislop books and will continue to seek them out as long as they are reasonably priced sorry but I felt this one was not worth my investment. Win some lose some. I ranked this one 3 stars being average IMHO. Enjoy
Enjoyed all authors books
The story of Marshall and Mary. Mary was hired by Marshall to be his wife for a year, because he was hard of hearing, and he wanted to present his sisters into society. He had a difficult time in society because he couldn't hear half of what was being said. Mary's father had died and she had nothing, she was starving. Marshall fell in love with Mary quickly. The villain of the story was Morley, he was sadistically cruel. As a friend of Marshall 's he didn't realize it until it was almost too late. This story also includes the Smirkes. The Smirkes are wonderful. This is not as funny as previous books but it is still good. Any book by Cari Hislop is a winner.
I've bought three of this author's offerings and like them, some more than others.

This story is unique and is worth reading unless all you expect is steamy sex. The idea of a mostly deaf hero is unique, and the heroine is a delight. Especially given her situation, they have an excellent solution to meet both of their needs. A good villain and a great supporting cast make for a very good read.

I look forward to more by this author.
Adore this author. This book was no different. Fun and sweet, with bits of silliness that made me grin like a fool. Now if only I could get her books in print... *hint-hint*
